Epicardial adipose tissue and progression of coronary artery calcium: cause and effect or simple association?
نویسنده
چکیده
I n this issue of iJACC, Mahabadi et al. (1) describe a parallel increase of subclinical atherosclerosis and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT). Two prior publications (2,3) reported a similar association, and together with experimental models, they support the role of EAT in atherosclerosis inception and progression. In an experimental porcine model, the investigators stripped the epicardial fat covering the middle section of the left anterior descending coronary artery and kept the animals alive for 3 more months on an atherosclerotic diet (4). They also performed intravascular ultrasound imaging before EAT stripping and just before sacrificing the

Echocardiographic Epicardial Adipose Tissue as a New Indicator of Cardiovascular Risk
Abstract Background and Purpose: Epicardial fat is the true visceral fat located around the heart, particularly around sub-epicardial coronary arteries that may locally interact and modulate the coronary arteries and myocardium through paracrine or vasocrine secretion of anti-inflammatory and proatherogenic cytokines. Most previous studies have used echocardiography and reported controversia...
متن کاملاسیدهای چرب ترانس بافت چربی و خطر ابتلا به بیماری عروق کرونر
Background & Aim: Dietary isomeric trans fatty acids are suspected to increase the risk of coronary artery disease. The fatty acid composition of human adipose tissue is a useful biomarker of the long-term average of dietary fat. In this population-based case-control study the association between trans fatty acids intake and the risk of coronary artery disease was investigated. Patients & M...
متن کاملAssociation Between Left Anterior Descending Artery Length with Coronary Artery Dominance: An Angiographic Study
Introduction: Although left anterior descending (LAD) artery supplies a large portion of the myocardium, the amount of blood supply provided by LAD is depended on the length of the LAD. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the association between coronary artery dominance and LAD anatomic types in patients with normal epicardial coronary arteries. Methods:...
متن کاملA single slice measure of epicardial adipose tissue can serve as an indirect measure of total epicardial adipose tissue burden and is associated with obstructive coronary artery disease.
AIMS To evaluate the practical use of the single slice measurement of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) at the level of the left main coronary artery (EATLM) in predicting the presence of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS AND RESULTS Quantification of EATTotal and EATLM was performed on non-contrast CT scans of consecutive patients (without history of revascularization, cardiac...
متن کاملTumor Necrosis Factor-α Gene Expression in Epicardial Adipose Tissue is Related to Coronary Atherosclerosis Assessed by Computed Tomography
AIMS Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α reportedly has key pro-inflammatory properties in both atherosclerosis and adipocytes. To further investigate the biologic impact of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) on coronary atherosclerosis, we evaluated the relationship between TNF-α gene expression in EAT and clinically-assessed coronary atherosclerosis on computed tomography (CT). METHODS We studied 47...
